The transfer case control module (TCCM) is used in four-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles to process, execute, and verify several movements and speeds. But how to reset the transfer case control module when the case fails to perform further?

Try to drain all the remaining charge from the battery entirely. Then reset the TCCM through ignition and accelerator using a jumper cable and keep them on for 15 seconds. Another way is to keep acceleration on and wait for a few minutes. Then release the gas pedal and give it enough time to relearn the code. Repeat the cycle 2/3 times. You can also use a 5-amp TCCM fuse to reset the case.

Why Would You Need to Reset the Transfer Case Control Module?

The TCCM is responsible for controlling the movement of transfer as well as the vehicle’s speed. It’s imperative to know in which situation you should reset the module as it is a sensitive component of the engine.

The first problem you will notice is a faulty TCCM that your driveshaft isn’t responding to. Well, that’s the start. Soon you will notice that the transmission is failing along with the axles. And finally, these problems will make the vehicle inoperative and risky to drive further.

Sometimes you will get a warning signal or message in the dashboard that the transfer case is malfunctioning or power failure. So, you should stop the vehicle and try to reset the TCCM to see whether the issues are being solved or not.

How to Proceed Resetting Transfer Case Control Module?

You can try resetting the TCCM in 3 different ways:

  • Easy way (turning off and on the accelerator)
  • Using the jumper cables
  • TCCM fuse

These three ways are pretty easy methods for any individual and can be performed in a garage. If any of these methods work, you won’t have to go to the repair shop or replace the whole transfer case.

Method 1: The Easy Ways to reset the transfer case control module

[su_note note_color=”#fafadd”]

It’s called the easy way because you won’t need extra tools to reset the transfer case control module. Therefore, follow these steps and wait for the result.

Step 1:

First of all, you have to turn the key position. It won’t make sense if you use this technique without turning the key position. When the key position is secure, then you can move on to the next step.

Step 2:

Now you have to press the accelerator pedal and wait for a few minutes. It doesn’t have to be an extended period, so 5 to 10 minutes is enough. At this time, the accelerator is checking the transmission functionality.

Step 3:

Then you can switch off the ignition key and let go of the gas pedal. Mainly the gas pedal accelerates the process of combustions. So, if the TCCM is to be reset, it needs to execute the acceleration properly.

Step 4:

Now again, it’s time to wait. After a few minutes, repeat the whole process from step one.

Step 5:

If you run the process two or three times, your TCCM should be ready to perform.

Method 2: Using the Jumper Cables

Whipping out jumper cables is the universal way to reset all the ECUs and control modules inside the engine. And it’s effective for almost all vehicles. Let’s show you how to proceed.

Step 1:

You can start by removing the negative battery cable. A screwdriver can do the job efficiently. But don’t let the cable fall anywhere in the engine.

You need to isolate the head of the cable, or it can pass the charge to any metal if it comes in contact with the metals.

Step 2:

Take a clean rag and cover the negative end so that it can’t come in contact with any metal or other materials.

Step 3:

Now get a jumper cable and attach one end with the negative end of the battery cable and another end with the positive end. After that, let the cable be on its own for a few minutes. It won’t matter whether you wait 5 minutes or 30 minutes.

It will drain all the charges from the battery and ECUs. If these parts stay positive, they will come to the opposing end and go down to the ground.

Step 4:

After waiting for the period, remove the jumper cables and rag. Then put the negative end back in its position.

Step 5:

Now you should get back to the car and put the key on. Then start the ignition and leave it for 10 to 15 seconds.

In this period, the control module will relearn the settings and set new values on the program.

Step 6:

Then switch off the ignition key and turn the key on again, which is mainly a cycle. Now start your car engine and let it run for more than five minutes. Thus, you can find the idling point and leave it be.

Make sure that you don’t start any accessories because they will consume extra power. After waiting, you will notice whether the engine is idling perfectly or not.

Step 7:

It’s time to run the gears and check if the sensors are functioning or still faulty. If you find any irregularity, repeat the method from step one 2/3 times, and then your car will be ready for the next few hundred miles.

Method 3: Using the TCCM Fuse

In this method, you also don’t need any accessories to reset the codes. You can just use the fuse and reset the TCCM.

Step 1:

First, find the TCCM fuse located at the bottom of a fuse box inside the module, and then pull it off from the box.

Step 2:

Now it’s the waiting time which is about half an hour. In the meantime, the fuse box ensures that there’s no connection between the accelerator and the control module.

Step 3:

Check if the fuse is full-functioning or not. If it is faulty, then get a new fuse and place it in the fuse box.

Step 4:

After that, you can turn on the ignition key and run the engine.

Step 5:

You will notice your vehicle’s light is blinking. It signifies that the reset of TCCM is processing. After that, you can turn off the engine and repeat the cycle five times.

Step 6:

Now your engine is ready to perform, but first, check whether the technique has worked or not.

Turn on the engine and see its idling points or RPMs. You can also check if the driveshaft or transmission is running smoothly or not.

Bottom Line

The transfer case control module is the key component of controlling the speed and acceleration of any four-wheel vehicle. So, if you notice any problem with the TCCM, you should reset it immediately.

Hopefully, you have learned how to reset transfer case control module through different techniques. But you can apply only one method at a time. It’s up to you to choose a resetting method. But don’t drive with a faulty TCCM, or you will be in trouble. Drive safely and take care of the vehicle!
